Sky-High with Little Ones: Tips for Stress-Free Plane Travel with Children

Traveling with children can be a daunting task, especially when it involves flying. However, with a bit of planning and a few strategic moves your family can enjoy a peaceful journey through the clouds. As a seasoned travelling family of five, we’ve picked up several tips and tricks along the way that help make our flights smoother and more comfortable for everyone involved. Here’s how we do it:

1. Pre-Order Kids’ Meals

Always book the kids’ meals in advance—ideally a week or two before your flight. Not only does this ensure that your children receive meals suited to their tastes and dietary needs but these meals are usually served before the main meal service. This timing is perfect as it allows your children to eat without waiting hungrily while flight attendants serve the entire cabin. You can then assist them more easily and they’re happily munching away by the time your meal arrives.

2. Carry an Empty Water Bottle

We’ve found it immensely helpful to pack an empty water bottle for each child as part of their carry-on. There are two main benefits to this approach: firstly, full water bottles can’t be taken through security due to liquid restrictions, so bringing them empty and filling them up post-security keeps you compliant with airport rules. Secondly, having a larger personal water supply means children can hydrate as needed without constantly buzzing for a flight attendant. This reduces stress for everyone involved.

3. Create a Takeoff and Landing Pack

To help ease the discomfort that can come with changes in cabin pressure during takeoff and landing, we equip our kids with a special pack. This includes:

• Chewable items: Gum or chewy candies/lollies help in equalising ear pressure.

• Suckable sweets: Hard candies like Mentos or Lifesavers are perfect for little ones to suck on.

• Entertainment essentials: A coloring book, crayons or pencils, and a comfortable pair of headphones, preferably noise cancelling (don’t forget the adapter if needed for the plane’s system).

• Comfort items: An extra pair of socks to switch into from their shoes enhances comfort, especially on longer flights.

• Night-time necessities: For long-haul flights, packing pyjamas and an eye mask can make a huge difference. It helps children feel settled and ready for sleep.

4. Pack an Amenities Kit

Just like the adults, kids appreciate a little refresh during and after a flight. Include a small toothbrush and toothpaste, a tiny tube of moisturizer, tissues and a packet of wipes. It’s a mini version of an adult’s amenities kit but tailored for young travelers.

Traveling by air with children doesn’t have to be a stressful ordeal. With some thoughtful preparation and strategic packing, you can ensure that the entire family arrives at your destination feeling refreshed and ready for adventure. Remember, the key is to keep them comfortable, entertained, well-fed and hydrated throughout the journey. By following these tips, our family has transformed travel days from stressful to enjoyable. Happy travels!
